At The Howard Primary School we care passionately about the education of the children in our care and do our utmost to ensure that they believe in themselves and achieve well.

We think that each person is special and we provide equal opportunities for every individual member of our school family to develop to his or her full potential within guidelines of acceptable behaviour and a set of values, which will fit each child for life and the society in which they live. We strive to serve our young people by setting the highest standards of teaching, learning and community life.

The aim of the staff and directors is to create a happy and stimulating learning environment in which children are helped to develop their natural curiosity and academic ability, as well as to learn physical, intellectual, social and aesthetic skills.

We aim to foster and nurture the children’s spiritual and moral growth and they are encouraged to adopt friendly, caring and considerate attitudes to one another and a respectful, polite manner to adults while at the same time developing a sense of self-reliance, self-respect and a sensitivity to other people around them and in the wider community.

 

The Howard Primary School is located in the centre of the delightful village of Elford, close to the Secret and Walled Gardens with the beautiful St. Peter's Church nearby. The school building dates back to 1856 and is both old and new! Our classrooms are bright, well ordered and stimulating places in which to learn.

We provide a high quality education within a well-balanced and broadly based curriculum for children from four to eleven years of age.

The school is organised into three mixed age classes. Our pupil to teacher ratio is good and this enables us to personalise teaching to the children’s needs.

We are proud to be part of The Small Schools Multi Academy Trust which incorporates The St. Mary’s and The Richard Crosse, Church of England Primary Schools. The Order to become part of the Multi Academy Trust was granted on 1st August 2015 however we have been working in partnership with the two schools since September 2014. We believe that being part of a larger organisation makes us large enough to cope but still small enough to care!

Thus we retain the best that a small school has to offer with the advantages that a large school have.

We have links with St. Peter’s Church in Elford and special services to celebrate important times and festivals in the Christian Church’s year take place in Church. Everyone in the school family, friends, relatives and the community are invited to join us at Harvest, Christmas and Easter and also at the Leavers’ Service at the end of the school year.

 

There is a daily assembly, which is broadly Christian and is led by school staff and visitors. Through this we aim to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural and social development of the children.

Our Curriculum

Our Curriculum is broad and balanced. Initially the children will follow an Early Years Curriculum, then the National Curriculum which we tailor to meet the needs of our learners. The National Curriculum gives a framework for learning in all subject areas through programmes of study which are set out to show the learning objectives.

Our curriculum map shows what is taught when and to which age group. You will find a copy of this on our website. Teaching at our school is well planned, imaginative and creative. We exploit every opportunity to enrich the learning experience of our children and have dovetailed into our schemes of work a range of cross curricular approaches that makes learning come alive.

English

Language development is one of the most important aspects of the curriculum as it is the basis of communication and learning. Speaking and listening, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation are all areas we aim to develop to very high standards by providing a rich and stimulating environment with varied resources and teaching techniques.

Great emphasis is laid upon the teaching of reading and a variety of teaching methods and approaches are used to encourage and motivate children’s learning, developing skills and fostering a love of books from the earliest days at school. In our literate classrooms, children become confident in their growing ability to handle books, texts and literature of all kinds.

Library

We are proud of our school library which contains a range of both fiction and non-fiction books. Information books are classified to the Dewey System as they are in a public library and children are taught how to use this.

Mathematics

Considerate importance is given to the teaching of mathematics. We want our children to enjoy the subject and to be motivated to master mathematical skills. They are taught how to apply their knowledge and skills to practical, everyday life.

 

Religious Education

We follow the Diocesan Syllabus for Religious Education and aim to develop the children’s awareness of Christianity and other faiths. Spiritual, moral, social and cultural teaching is central to the ethos of our school and we aim to give the children a firm foundation of social values in order to be effective citizens and to be able to challenge prejudice.

Computing

Computers and other devices play a critical role in enhancing learning for our children. They are taught a range of skills, including coding, to enable them to be proficient in using IT.

History and Geography

We have a topic approach to History and Geography throughout the school. Elford, Tamworth and Lichfield are important local resources and we use our environment and community to its best advantage. We aim to ensure that the children are aware of their place and purpose in society and in today’s changing world.

Science

Children are naturally curious about themselves and their environment. Our aim in Science is to build upon their curiosity and to enable each child to develop an enquiring mind and a thirst for exploration and discovery through first-hand experience by which scientific knowledge and skills will be acquired.

Music

We are proud of our musical tradition and all classes are taught by a specialist music teacher. As a Singing School, singing is at the heart of what we do. Children are given the opportunity to play a range of instruments and whole class guitar tuition is given to children in upper Key stage 2. We employ peripatetic music teachers to teach piano, keyboard, flute, clarinet and cornet. Children are also encouraged to join the Academy Choir.

Art, Design and Technology

Opportunities to experiment with materials and techniques in all areas of Art and Craft are given to the children in order to stimulate and develop their creative abilities. Great importance is attached to valuing children’s work and its presentation and giving them the opportunity to plan, design, make and evaluate in D & T.

Physical Education

Our physical education programme for all children includes gymnastics, dance, games, athletics, swimming and outdoor activities. The programme is well balanced and provides the opportunity for all children to participate in two hours of exercise each week. We hope that through providing children with enjoyable activities we will give them positive attitudes to adopting healthy lifestyles.

Residential Experiences

Key Stage 2 pupils all experience a residential outdoor education visit every year to enable them to experience such activities as sailing, canoeing, abseiling and archery.

Modern Foreign Languages

French is taught on a weekly basis to all children by a qualified language specialist. Languages are presented in a fun, informal manner whilst still following a comprehensive scheme of work which builds upon previous knowledge. This approach to learning languages embraces the children’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm whilst developing strong foundations for mastering languages at secondary school.

Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship (PSHE)

The school addresses Health Education in all its aspects through family life, sex education, safety, health-related exercise, personal hygiene, food and nutrition, environmental health, substance use and misuse as well as the psychological aspects of health, including self-value and relationships with others. These elements may be addressed specifically through Physical Education, through visiting speakers from the Police, NSPCC and St. John Ambulance, the school nurse and through Religious Education and the ethos of the school.

Early Years Foundation Stage

Our Early Years Foundation Stage Class takes full time reception children. We follow an EYFS curriculum and take our children on their learning journey towards and beyond the Early Learning Goals.

Performing Arts

All children are given the opportunity to take part in school plays. The infants perform at Christmas, lower key stage 2 at Easter and upper key stage 2 at the end of the school year. We are proud of this tradition as we believe that such experiences enhance children’s education.

Friends Association

The Friends work tirelessly for the benefit of the school. They organise fund raising activities but also events such as discos that make the children’s schooldays memorable.

High School Links

We have strong links with the Rawlett High School and are strategic partners in the National Forest Teaching School.

Child Protection and Safeguarding

The school is fully committed to Keeping Children Safe in Education in line with the most recent statutory guidance. Stringent policies and procedures are in place.

Reporting to Parents

During the school year there are formal and informal parents’ evenings where parents and guardians are invited into school to discuss their child’s progress.

Special Educational Needs

Many children, at some time in their school lives, have a special educational need. Should further help be necessary, we have an Academy Special Educational Needs Coordinator who develops tailor made provision and liaises with outside agencies such as Educational Psychologists who provide us with specialist support. Parents will always be informed and their permission sought before we involve other professionals in advising us how to proceed with issues relating to special educational need.

If your child needs additional support but does not necessarily have a special educational need, we provide extra tuition, through a variety of ways, tailored to meet your child’s requirements. Some children are particularly gifted in certain areas of the curriculum and consistently operate at a level far in advance of their peers. Such children will be given work of appropriate breadth and depth to challenge their ability and to develop their talents.

All our children have full access to our curriculum regardless of ethnicity, creed, gender, ability or social circumstances.

Minibuses

Our fleet of academy minibuses are used to enhance and enrich our children’s learning. The buses are used daily to support our work and to travel to places for sporting fixtures and also for field work studies and other enrichment activities. We see this resource as integral to what we offer as the children are able to experience first-hand the wonderful world we live in.

Dyslexia Friendly Status

As a Dyslexia Friendly School all staff have the skills and strategies to support children with Dyslexia. Early identification systems are in place and classroom management is adjusted to suit the needs of all children.

School Meals

Children are given the option to have school lunches (of main meal, dessert and drink) or to bring a packed lunch. School meals are of a high standard and are cooked and served by in-house catering staff. We operate a cafeteria style service and there is a choice of main courses and desserts. Meals for children in Reception to Year 2 are free. Children in years 3-6 may pay for a school lunch unless they are entitled to free school meals.

Care Club

Care Club is a self-funded before and after school service managed by the Multi Academy Trust. The facility allows parents the opportunity to pursue their employment, education or training commitments, safe in the knowledge that their children are being cared for in familiar surroundings, outside of normal school hours.

The children enjoy playing with their friends and take part in a range of activities, looked after by adults experienced in caring for children. All staff have appropriate DBS clearance, relevant qualifications, experience and first aid training. Care Club is open from 7.30a.m. to 8.30a.m. and 3.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. from Monday to Friday, term-time only. Further information is available on request.

Our School

At the end of the Academic Year every child receives a written report which also includes information about the results of the most recent assessments. Parents are, however, encouraged to contact school to arrange other meetings if required.
